The Special Committee for the Protection of Judicial Justice and Prevention of Dictatorship (Chairperson Cho Bae-sook) condemned the Special Prosecutor’s coercive investigation through a statement. The committee criticized, “It has been revealed that Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok threatened an administrative officer to manipulate the statement, changing ‘verification done to the best of one’ into ‘insufficient verification.’” They added, “The specter of Namyeong-dong from 40 years ago has been resurrected in the Special Prosecutor’s investigation room.” They further expressed their determination to fight, stating, “True judicial reform is not the withdrawal of the indictment against Lee Jae-myung, but the independence of the judiciary from power.”
Senior Spokesperson Kwak Kyu-taek also issued an urgent statement, defining the situation as “an investigation with a predetermined conclusion, indicting the aides for destroying evidence by throwing hard disks into the field embankment while not indicting the lawmaker who ordered it.” Spokesperson Kwak stated, “The only remaining path is a ‘Unification Church special prosecutor’ with guaranteed political neutrality,” strongly urging the Democratic Party to accept the special prosecutor and calling for Rep. Jeon Jae-soo to resign from his candidacy. The Joint Investigation Headquarters’ decision is expected to serve as a fuse that reignites issues of ‘collusion between politics and religion’ and ‘judicial unfairness’ in the upcoming local elections.
