가슴으로 듣는 42번째 곡으로 놓은 플라멩코의 울림을 잇는 스페인의 젊은 가수 마리아 호세 예르고의 ‘지중해의 자장가’를 들으면서 가슴 속에 남은 기억을 가만히 매만졌다. 이어 천재적인 감성으로 깊은 궤적을 남긴 안준현 아티스트의 드로잉 작품 ‘기억의 흔적(Traces of memory)’을 자막 영상의 스토리 이미지로 담아냈다.
지난 2015년 9월 초 세계는 한 장의 사진 앞에서 충격에 빠졌다. 시리아 난민들을 태운 배가 지중해에서 뒤집혀 터키 남서쪽 유명 휴양지 보드룸 해변에서 붉은색 티셔츠와 청색 반바지를 입은 아기 '에이란 쿠르디'가 지중해 물결이 빠져나가는 모래밭에 숨진 채 발견된 충격적인 장면이었다. 당시 난민 23명을 태우고 그리스를 향하던 소형 보트가 뒤집혀 세 살 나이 아가, ‘에이란 쿠르디’를 포함한 어린이 5명 등 모두 12명이 숨졌으며 에이란의 5살 형과 어머니도 세상을 떠나 세계는 말을 잃었다.
당시 필자는 다음과 같은 시를 써 아가를 데려간 하늘에 전하였다.

1994년 스페인 안달루시아 코르도바의 포소블랑코에서 태어난 마리아 호세 예르고는 외할아버지 ‘페페(Pepe)’로부터 플라멩코 노래를 배웠다. 외할아버지는 독학으로 플라멩코 노래를 배운 무명의 예인이었다. 들판에서 땅을 일구고 물을 주며 손녀에게 노래를 가르친 최초의 스승이었다. 가수는 훗날 인터뷰에서 “할아버지가 땅에 물을 줄 때 나의 목소리에도 물을 주는 것 같았다”라고 말하였다.
이후 바이올린을 공부한 그녀는 뛰어난 음악적 재능에 장학금을 지원받으며 카탈루냐 고등 음악학교에서 플라멩코 성악을 공부하였다. 졸업 후 바르셀로나로 옮겨가 본격적인 음악 활동을 시작하면서 많은 어려움을 겪었다. 2018년 외로움 속에서 자신의 음악적 뿌리를 찾아가는 과정의 자전적 감성을 담은 싱글 앨범 ‘모래언덕의 소녀(Niña de las dunas)’를 스스로 제작하였다.
SNS를 통하여 알려진 음악이 100만 뷰를 기록하면서 스페인의 현대적 감성(Urban)을 가진 신예 또는, 실험적 음악가들의 작품을 한자리에 모은 프로젝트 컴필레이션 앨범 문치스(Moonchies)에 참여하는 기회를 얻었다. 2019년 7월 무렵 발표된 앨범에 수록된 가수의 곡은 ‘넌 나를 보지만, 안 보여(Me miras pero no me ves)’였다.
이후 소니 뮤직과 계약이 이루어져 2019년 9월 4일 정규 앨범 발매에 앞서 디지털 싱글 형태로 발표되었던 노래가 ‘지중해의 자장가(Nana del Mediterráneo)’였다. 이는 앞서 언급한 연이어 발생한 난민 희생에 대한 참상과 아픔을 매만지는 노래로 큰 인기를 얻었다.

이러한 배경에서 2020년 1월 31일 최초의 정식 데뷔 미니 앨범(EP)이 발표되면서 ‘지중해의 자장가’가 수록된 앨범 제목이 ‘치유(Sanación)’였다. 가수가 앨범을 발표한 직후 세계는 인류사에 유례가 없는 코로나19 팬데믹 상황을 맞았다. 이어 2020년 3월 세계보건기구(WHO)가 팬데믹을 선언하면서 전 세계가 봉쇄되었다. 당시 스페인은 감염자와 사망자 수가 급증하면서 2020년 3월 14일 국가 비상사태를 선언하였다.

As I listened to "Nana del Mediterráneo," a young Spanish singer who continues the resonance of flamenco, the 42nd song for listening with your heart, I quietly touched the memories lingering in my heart. Next, I captured the profound trajectory of artist Ahn Jun-hyun's drawing, "Traces of Memory," with its ingenious sensibility, as a story image in the subtitled video.
In early September 2015, the world was shocked by a single photograph. The shocking scene was the discovery of a baby, Ayran Kurdi, wearing a red T-shirt and blue shorts, dead on the sandy beach of Bodrum, a popular resort town in southwestern Turkey, after a boat carrying Syrian refugees capsized in the Mediterranean. The small boat carrying 23 refugees to Greece capsized, killing 12 people, including three-year-old Ayran Kurdi and five other children. Born in 1994 in Pozoblanco, Cordoba, Andalusia, Spain, Maria José Yergo learned flamenco singing from her maternal grandfather, Pepe. Her grandfather was a little-known flamenco artist who taught himself. He was her granddaughter's first teacher, teaching her singing while working and watering the fields. The singer later said in an interview, "When my grandfather watered the land, it felt like he was watering my voice."
She later studied violin, and her exceptional musical talent earned her a scholarship to study flamenco singing at the Conservatoire de Catalunya. After graduating, she moved to Barcelona and began her music career in earnest, but faced many challenges. In 2018, she produced the single "Niña de las dunas" (Girl of the Dunes), an autobiographical account of her journey to find her musical roots amidst loneliness.
The song, which gained recognition through social media and garnered over one million views, led to her participation in Moonchies, a compilation album showcasing the work of emerging and experimental Spanish musicians with a contemporary (urban) sensibility. The song featured on the album, released around July 2019, was "Me miras pero no me ves" (You See Me, But You Don't See Me).
