최근 국제학술지 《커렌트 바이올로지(Current Biology) 》에 오스트리아 빈 수의과 대학 연구팀이 놀라운 사실을 발표했다. 소들이 농장에 있는 빗자루를 ‘도구’로 사용해 가려운 곳을 긁는다는 것이다. 젖소들은 혀와 발이 닿지 않는 곳을 긁기 위해 빗자루의 위치와 각도를 계산해서 혀로 빗자루를 잡고 등과 배를 긁는다는 게 밝혀졌다. 비 영장류 포유류인 소가 도구를 쓴다는 것을 최초로 밝혀낸 것이다. 이 뿐이 아니다. 개들은 조용히 인간의 대화를 엿듣고 ‘눈치’를 챙긴다는 사실도 밝혀졌다. 사람들이 대화하는 목소리, 톤, 입모양, 표정을 읽고, 사람들이 무얼할지 자기가 어떤 처신을 해야할 지 판단한다는 것이다. 개가 사람들의 대화를 읽고 다음에 어떤 일이 벌어진지를 예측하여 행동한다니 놀라운 얼이다.
그런데 대한민국 서울 여의도 1번지에 모여 사는 300여명의 ‘금배지족(族)’들을 보라. 과연 이들을 소나 개보다 진화한 고등 동물이라 부를 수 있는가? 과연 '만물의 영장'이라고 표현해도 되는가? 동물 행동학적 관점에서 볼 때, 대한민국 정치판은 진화가 멈춘 갈라파고스요, 지능의 퇴행이 일어나는 미스터리한 동물원이다.
첫째, 소는 빗자루로 ‘시원함’을 주는데, 정치인은 권력으로 ‘분노’를 유발한다. 소는 가려움이라는 문제를 해결하기 위해 빗자루라는 도구를 ‘창의적’으로 활용한다. 도구를 써서 남(주인)을 해치지 않고 제 삶의 질을 높인다. 이것이 진정한 지능이다. 반면 우리 정치인들은 어떤가. 그들에게 쥐어준 ‘입법권’과 ‘예산’이라는 도구는 국민의 가려운 곳을 긁으라고 준 빗자루다. 허나 그들은 이 빗자루를 거꾸로 쥐고 서로의 머리통을 후려치는 몽둥이로 쓴다. 국민이 “여기가 가렵다”고 소리쳐도, 엉뚱한 생살을 긁어대다 못해 상처가 나게 만든다. 소의 지능이 여의도 정치인의 평균 지능보다 높을지도 모른다는 합리적 의심이 든다.
둘째, 개는 ‘눈치’라도 보는데, 정치인은 ‘눈알’을 부라린다. 개는 주인이 화가 나면 꼬리를 내리고 구석으로 숨는다. 생존을 위한 고도의 사회적 지능, 즉 ‘눈치’가 탑재된 것이다. 그런데 여의도 정치인들은 주권자인 국민이 분노하여 고함을 질러도 눈 하나 깜짝 않는다. 오히려 '국민이 오해한 것'이라며 훈계질을 하거나, '나는 모르는 일'이라며 뻔뻔하게 눈알을 부라린다. 개가 주인의 기분을 무시하고 밥상머리에서 으르렁거리면 ‘미친개’ 소리를 듣고 쫓겨난다. 그런데 정치판에서는 뻔뻔하게 짖어댈수록 ‘선명성 있는 투사’라며 공천을 받는다. 개집의 도덕률보다 못한 여의도의 윤리 의식에 통탄을 금할 길이 없다.
셋째, ‘여의도 사파리'에서 사라진 수치심. 동물들은 무리 생활의 규칙을 어기면 도태된다. 하물며 개도 아무 데나 똥을 싸면 부끄러워하는 시늉이라도 한다. 그러나 여의도 정치인들은 온 나라에 오물을 뿌려놓고도 '냄새나는 건 네 탓'이라며 남 탓 공방만 벌인다. 뇌 과학적으로 볼 때 전두엽의 ‘수치심 담당 구역’이 집단으로 마비된 것이 분명하다. 소도 알고 개도 아는 상식과 소통이 여의도 담장만 넘어가면 실종된다. 국민은 이제 TV에 정치인이 나올 때마다 채널을 돌린다. 차라리 '동물의 왕국'을 보는 것이 정신 건강에 훨씬 이롭기 때문이다. 적어도 거긴 약육강식의 질서라도 있지만 여의도는 ‘무능강식(무능할수록 강한 방식)’이다. 게다가 소나 개만도 못한 행동을 하는 정치인을 응원한다고 따라다니며 소리지르는 자들을 보라. 불이 빛인줄 알고 뛰어드는 불나방이 따로없다.
동물은 살기 위해 머리를 쓰고 진화하는데, 정치인은 저만 잘 살기 위해 양심을 버리고 퇴화한다. 이제는 진지하게 고민해 봐야 한다. 차라리 국회의원석을 싹 비우고, 빗자루 쓸 줄 아는 젖소와 눈치 빠른 리트리버를 앉히는 게 도움이 되지 않겠는가? 적어도 그들은 국민이 준 빗자루로 엄한 짓은 안 할 것이고, 주인이 화내면 듣는 척이라도 할 것이다.
개나 소만도 못한 정치인들을 보는 국민의 심정은 이미 ‘화병(火病)’ 단계를 넘어섰다. 여의도의 ‘금배지족’들은 제발 소가 빗자루를 다루는 영상을 보고 벤치마킹을 하라. 짐승보다 못하다는 소리를 듣고도 부끄러워하지 않다면, 정말로 인간이기를 포기한 것이다. 제발 금배지 중독증에서 벗어나 양식과 상식이 통하는 정치를 하라. 지금 개와 소가 웃는다.

[Editorial] Yeouido's Dirty Politics... Even Dogs and Cows Have Thoughts and Perceptions...

Recently, a research team from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in Austria published a surprising discovery in the international academic journal Current Biology. They found that cows use brooms on farms as "tools" to scratch itchy spots. They calculated the position and angle of the brooms, grasping them with their tongues and scratching their backs and bellies to reach places their tongues and feet couldn't reach. This marks the first discovery of a non-primate mammal, a cow, using tools. But that's not all. Dogs have also been found to quietly eavesdrop on human conversations and "read the mood." They read people's voices, tones, lip shapes, and facial expressions, and then determine what they will do and how they should behave. It's remarkable how dogs can read people's conversations and anticipate what will happen next.
But consider the 300 or so "Geumbaejijok" (Golden Badge Tribe) living together in Yeouido, Seoul. Can they truly be called higher-evolution animals than cows or dogs? Can they truly be called "princes of all creation"? From an animal behavioral perspective, South Korea's political landscape is a Galapagos where evolution has stalled, a mysterious zoo where intelligence is declining.
First, cows use brooms to provide "refreshment," while politicians use their power to incite "anger." Cows creatively utilize the broom as a tool to solve their itch. They use tools to improve their own quality of life without harming others (their owners). This is true intelligence. Conversely, what about our politicians? The tools we've given them—"legislative power" and "budget"—are brooms meant to scratch the people's itches. However, they hold these brooms upside down and use them as clubs to beat each other's heads. Even when citizens cry out, "It itches here," they scratch at the wrong spot, even causing a wound. It raises the reasonable suspicion that the intelligence of a cow might be higher than the average intelligence of a politician in Yeouido.
Second, while dogs are "ready to see," politicians glare. When their owners get angry, dogs tuck their tails and hide in a corner. They possess a highly developed social intelligence, or "ready to see," for survival. Yet, even when the sovereign citizens, the citizens, roar in anger, the politicians in Yeouido don't even blink. Instead, they admonish them, claiming, "The people misunderstood," or shamelessly glare, claiming, "I don't know anything about this." A dog that ignores its owner's feelings and growls at the dinner table is labeled a "mad dog" and kicked out. Yet, in politics, the more brazenly a dog barks, the more likely it is to be nominated as a "clear-sighted fighter." I can't help but lament the ethical standards of Yeouido, which are worse than those of a doghouse.
Third, the sense of shame has vanished from "Yeouido Safari." Animals are weeded out if they break the rules of pack life. Even dogs feign shame if they defecate anywhere. Yet, politicians in Yeouido, despite spreading filth across the nation, only engage in blame games, claiming, "It's your fault it smells." From a neuroscientific perspective, it's clear that the "shame area" of the frontal lobe has been collectively paralyzed. Common sense and communication, both common sense and common sense, vanish once they cross the Yeouido fence. People now change channels whenever politicians appear on TV, believing that watching "Animal Kingdom" is far more beneficial to their mental health. At least there's a law of the jungle, but in Yeouido, it's "the law of the jungle" (the less competent the stronger). And look at those who follow and scream in support of politicians whose behavior is worse than that of cows or dogs. There's no such thing as a moth that leaps to a flame, thinking it's light.
Animals evolve with their brains to survive, but politicians, driven by self-interest, abandon their conscience and degenerate. It's time for serious consideration. Wouldn't it be more helpful to empty the National Assembly of seats and replace them with cows that know how to sweep with a broom and quick-witted retrievers? At the very least, they won't resort to harsh tactics with the brooms the people have given them, and they'll at least pretend to listen when their owners get angry.
The public's discontent with politicians who are worse than dogs or cows has already surpassed the "hwabyung" stage. The "gold badge tribe" in Yeouido should watch videos of cows handling brooms and learn from them. If they don't feel ashamed when they're called inferior to animals, they have truly given up on being human. Please break free from your gold badge addiction and engage in politics based on common sense and common sense. Dogs and cows are laughing now.
