14일 롯데자이언츠에 따르면, 김민재 코치(드림팀 총괄)는 이날 세상을 떠났다.
1973년생 김민재 코치는 부산공업고등학교를 졸업한 뒤 1991년 고졸 신인으로 롯데에 입단했고, 1992년 롯데의 마지막 한국시리즈 우승을 경험했다.
1991년부터 2001년까지 롯데에서 유격수로 활약한 고인은 2002년~2005년 SK 와이번스(현 SSG 랜더스)에서 활동했고, 이후 한화 이글스로 이적해 2009년을 끝으로 은퇴했다. 프로에서 19시즌 통산 2113경기에 출전해 타율 0.247 1503안타 71홈런, 607타점 696득점 174도루의 성적을 거뒀다.
김민재는 국가대표 유격수로도 선발돼 2002 부산 아시안게임, 2006 월드베이스볼클래식(WBC), 2008 베이징 올림픽 등 국제 대회도 누볐다. 특히 WBC 4강 신화와 베이징 올림픽 전승 우승에 힘을 더했다.
은퇴 이후에는 한화와 KT 위즈, 두산 베어스, SSG 등에서 코치로 일하다가 2024년 김태형 감독의 부름을 받고 친정팀 롯데에 복귀해 수석 코치를 맡았다.
하지만 2024년 병원 검진에서 암 진단을 받았고, 치료에 전념했다. 이후 회복세를 보여 지난해 스프링캠프부터 정상적으로 코치 업무를 소화했다. 그러나 지난해 말 갑작스럽게 병세가 악화됐고 결국 세상을 떠났다.
한편, 고(故) 김민재 코치의 빈소는 부산시민장례식장 402호실에 마련됐다. 발인은 16일 오전 6시 30분, 장지는 영락공원이다.
