2002년도 더 타임스와 2010년에 제작된 영국 타큐멘터리 영화 The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan에서 바차바지(Bacha bāzī)의 악명을 고발하면서 이 기가 막힌 풍습에 전 세계가 경악했다. 아프가니스탄의 전통 악습인 이 바차바지는 현재, 평범한 동성애가 아니라 명백한 소년 성착취라 볼 수 있다. 이 악습인 바차바지(Bacha bāzī)가 언제, 어떻게 시작되어 현재까지 오게 되었을까?
고대 그리스에서는 남성 무희들이 여성과 같이 화장을 하고 춤추는 풍습이 있었으며 그런 아름다운 남성을 선택해 동성애를 즐기는 환락의 풍속도 존재했다. 특히 테베에서는 동성애자들의 군대인 "신성군단"이 존재했다. 시민 계급인 성인 남성과 곧 시민이 될 청소년이 동성애를 하는 문화가 광범위하게 있었고 이들은 현대적인 동성애자와 달리 연인 관계인 동시에 성인 남성이 스승의 역할을 맡아 곧 시민이 될 소년에게 시민으로서 사회적 교양을 가르쳐주는 스승과 제자 관계이기도 하였다. 그리고 마케도니아에 의해 그리스가 정복되고 알렉산드로스 대왕이 동방 원정을 하게 되면서 아케메네스 페르시아 제국을 정복했다. 그리고 중앙아시아 일대도 석권한 알렉산드로스 대왕은 각 중앙아시아 지역에서도 자신의 이름을 딴 "알렉산드리아" 라는 도시를 건설하면서 그리스인들을 지배자로 하여 거주케하였다. 그로 인해 건국된 국가가 바로 박트리아 왕국이었다.
박트리아 왕국으로 인해 그리스 문화가 중앙아시아 대부분 지역으로 퍼지게 되었다. 그 박트리아와 서역 월지의 후예들이 혼혈한 종족들이 흉노의 침공으로 월지가 멸망하자 오늘날 아프가니스탄 지역으로 내려와 뿌리를 내렸다. 그러면서 아프가니스탄 전 지역에 그리스 문화가 전파되었는데 이 때 그리스의 동성애 문화도 함께 전파되었던 것이다. 남성 무희가 여성처럼 화장을 하고 여성복장을 하고 춤을 추게 된 문화인 바차바지(Bacha bāzī)가 이 때부터 시작된 것이다. 바차바지는 페르시아어로 '소년(bachen)' '놀이(bazi)'라는 어휘의 합성으로, 노는 소년이라는 뜻으로, 주로 공연을 하면서 생계를 꾸려나가는 청소년 무용수들을 뜻하고 있다. 주로 9~15살 사이의 가난한 집 아이들을 모집해서 댄서로 키워주는 것이 일반적이며, 여장을 하여 공연을 시킨다. 이슬람의 종교법으로 인해 여자가수들을 데려다 공연시키는 것은 어려우니까 그 대용품으로 투입시키는 것으로 변질되었다.
이들 청소년 무용수들은 아프가니스탄 탈레반 정부의 공권력의 보호를 받지 못해 성매매나 성착취, 납치의 대상이 되는 것은 당연했고, 폭행이나 강간 사건을 당해도 처벌이 이루어지지 않는 경우가 대다수였다. 더불어 이슬람 원리주의로 인해 동성애가 멸시되는 아프가니스탄에서도 이들을 상대로 성관게를 가지거나 연애를 하는 것은 서로 모른척하는 경우가 많다. 이는 남색, 전통적으로 이를 향유하는 대부분의 가해자들은 지역의 토호나 유력 군벌들이었고 이슬람 모스크의 이맘들도 이를 즐겼다고 한다. 그러다보니 아프가니스탄의 게이들은 명예살인을 당하거나 테러, 징역형과 같은 법적인 처벌을 당하기 십상인데다 설사 처벌에서 면죄된다 해도 주변 시민들에게 살인위협을 받거나 폭력에 노출되고, 더불어 집단 따돌림도 함께 동반할 수 있기에 서로 모른척 할 수밖에 없었던 것이다. 권력자나 부유한 자들은 뇌물로 법망을 피하는 경우가 많다보니 아프가니스탄의 동성애자들은 권력자와 부자들이 동성을 취해도 처벌을 받지 않는데 자신들은 돈과 권력이 없기 때문에 보호받을 수 있는 권리가 없기에 인권의 사각지대에 놓여 있는 것이다.
이와 같은 성착취 관습에 대해 근절하려고 오랜 기간 동안 노력해온 바 있다. 아프가니스탄 칸국, 시르 알리 칸 시절인 1872년부터 1873년까지 일시적으로 금지하기도 했지만, 오래 지나지 않아 흐지부지 되었으며 이 때문에 보호국이었던 영국인들이 바차바지 풍습에 대해 기록을 남겨 화재가 되기도 했다. 미국-아프가니스탄 전쟁 직후에 바차바지들을 성매매하는 풍습이 다시 재확산되자 미국 측에서도 이를 근절하려 했지만 현지 문화를 존중해야 한다는 원칙으로 인해 없애는데 실패했다. 이와 같은 바차바지로 일하는 청소년들은 나이가 들면 인기를 잃기도 하였고 그에 따라 여성과 결혼하는 것이 일반적이지만, 바차바지 중개업자를 일하면서 다른 바차바지들을 모집하는 형식으로 대를 물려 악습을 이어주는 경우가 빈번했다. 그리고 남자와의 성매매로 생활을 연명하는 경우도 빈번하고, 트랜스젠더와 게이로서의 정체성을 지니더라도 바차바자로 일하는것 자체가 남자에게 몸을 판다며 멸시당하는 일이고, 공개적으로 커밍아웃을 하기 어려워 이중적인 생활하는 경우가 많다.
소련-아프가니스탄 전쟁 직후 탈레반의 주요 개혁 과제 중 하나가 바차바지의 타파였다. 탈레반의 정당성은 샤리아 율법에 입각한 사회질서를 재건하는 것이었다. 바차바지는 샤리아가 금지하는 동성애와 사치, 향락 모두가 포함되었기 때문이다. 또한 탈레반이 상대한 무자헤딘들 가운데도 바차바치를 사들여 향락을 즐기는 자들도 상당수 있었던 것도 사실인지라 악습을 타파하는 것이 지지층 확보를 위한 정책으로 비교적 잘 이용되었다. 그렇기 때문에 탈레반의 집권 시기 바차바지는 양귀비와 같은 마약의 재배와 함께 엄격하게 금지되는 범죄였으며, 이와 같은 행위들이 발각되면 당사자들은 사형에 처해졌다. 물론, 이들이 혐오한 것은 아동 성범죄자가 아니라 동성 간 성행위였고, 그 때문에 가해자가 누구인지도 모르는데 성착취 피해자인 아이만 처형당하는 일도 부지기수였다. 미국-아프가니스탄 전쟁 직후 재집권한 아프가니스탄 이슬람 공화국에서 바차바지의 문제는 더욱 심각해졌다.
탈레반이 축출되고 나서 나타난 보상심리 때문인지 알 수는 없지만 지역 사회 곳곳에서 재유행된 것은 물론이고 심지어 말단 군경들 사이에서도 권위와 남성의 상징이으로 자리 잡아 즐기는 지경까지 오게 되었다. 이러한 악습이 아프가니스탄의 대중들 사이에서 지탄의 대상이 되긴 했지만 누구 하나 이 풍속을 즐긴 것에 대해 언급하지 못했다. 2017년에 법률이 개정되어, 바차바지는 엄연한 성폭력 범죄로 규정되는 것으로 마무리지었지만, 유튜브에 돌아다니는 영상들을 보면 바차바지들이 여전히 밤 무대 일에 종사하며 돈벌이를 하는 모습을 여전히 볼 수 있다. 그렇지만 2021년에 탈레반이 재집권하면서 그 이후 이러한 악습이 근절될 일은 어려울 것으로 보인다. 그나마 공화국 시기에 구축해 놓은 인프라들을 탈레반들이 모두 원상태로 돌린데다가, 식량 난으로 인해 국가 기능이 제대로 돌아가지 않는 상태에서 장기 매매와 신생아 거래 등의 비극도 벌어지고 있다. 그러다보니 고작 매춘이 사라질리가 만무하고 바차바지도 근절될리도 없을 것이니 참으로 안타까운 일이다.

There was a custom of male dancers wearing makeup and dancing like women in ancient Greece, and there was also a custom of joy in choosing such a beautiful man to enjoy homosexuality. In Thebes, in particular, there was a "holy army," an army of homosexuals.
